RespectWaihi calendars

One of the ways we can create positive change in our communities is to think about the kind of community we would like to live in, how we would like people to treat each other, what our values are, and how we can “be the change we want to see.”

The RespectWaihi calendar has brought together a diverse group of children and young people in our community who all have something to say about respect, whether it be for ourselves, for others, or for our environment.

As well as celebrating the amazing children and young people in our community, their leaders, coaches, teachers and mentors, it is our hope that their messages will prompt further reflection and discussion, about respect and what it means for each of us.

We only have a few of these wonderful calendars left, be in quick to get yours!

Creative Empowerment Programme

This series of short interactive workshops incorporates elements of creativity, fun, relaxation and personal development as a tool for positive change.

Some of the topics covered include:

Identifying problem solving strategies

Enhancing communication skills

Goal setting and staying motivated

Overcoming financial difficulties and attaining financial independence

Summer closedown

How did we get to mid-December again already?!

As usual the Centre will be having a short summer close-down for the weeks of Christmas and New Year. Our last day open for services in 2014 will be Thursday 18th December. The last Spade to Spoon community lunch for 2014 will be on Friday 19th December. The Centre will open again on Monday 5th January 2015, and, all going well with availability of volunteers, the first community lunch for 2015 will be on 9th January. Same pattern for the working bees down at the garden: this Thursday will be last official working bee before the holidays, and we’ll resume on 8th January.

We wish you all a peaceful and relaxing few weeks. Thanks for your support in 2014, and see you next year!

Last free legal clinic for 2014

Hi All,

Just to let you know that the last Baywide Legal Clinic of the year will be this Thursday (4th December) there is one remaining appointment available for that day at 2.30pm

If anyone needs to see a lawyer urgently after this Baywide are still holding clinics in Katikati up to the 18th December, so clients could be directed to the Resource Centre there.

Baywide will return in the new year on the 22nd January and from then on will be with us for the first and third Thursdays of the month, from 1pm. There are 4 appointments available at each clinic, and the lawyer works by appointment only – no drop ins.

Bookings are made through the Resource Centre, the information required is: Name of client, contact phone number for client and a rough description of the problem, eg tenancy issues, family law, wills etc.

Perhaps you could pass this info on to any clients and networks who may find it useful.

Spade to Spoon keeps growing

Over the weekend we put up the first tunnel house down at the Spade to Spoon community garden! Regular garden working bees during daylight savings are 5.30pm-7.30pm down at the garden next to Waihi BP Service Station. All welcome. We also continue to put on delicious lunches every Friday at the Resource Centre 4 Mueller St – serving at 12.30pm. We have a good time preparing the kai, and always welcome helpers, so if you’re keen or you have anything you want to donate to the project – garden or kitchen – just get in touch on 863 7555. September TED talks with Waihi Time Bank

This month we have a couple of great talks to watch: Rachel Sussman takes us on a humbling journey with “The oldest living things in the world” and Daniel Reisel talks about “The neuropsychology of restorative justice” and comes to some thought-provoking conclusions on how we should deal with offenders, including some of the more heinous kinds.

Preserving Lemons

PRESERVING LEMONS: if you are interested in preserving lemons, come along to a workshop at the Resource Centre 2pm Fri 19th September. Dave will give a demonstration. We’ll have some extra lemons available, but if you want to take any away please bring along a a jam jar or bottling jar etc. If you have spare lemons, and special salt/spices you’d like to try preserving with bring those along too. Apparently they taste delicious. Should be fun Any queries give us a call on 863 7555

If you would like to grow some seeds to seedlings for Spade to Spoon, we want to hear from you! We can provide seeds and materials, you provide water, a sunny warm spot, and TLC. Grow six keep two for yourself if you want. We’ll be doing some coordination of the growing to get a mix of the “what” and the “when” but there should be an option for anyone who wants to get involved. Get Out and Vote

Democracy is one of those things where the journey is as important as the destination. Democratic politics is as much about active citizens as it is about politicians. Nearly a third of Kiwis didn’t vote in the last election. That’s not good for our democracy. The “Get Out and Vote” campaign aims to turn that around this year. How the teddy bear taught us compassion

August’s TED talk hosted by Waihi Timebank will be “How the teddy bear taught us compassion”.

At Waihi Community Resource Centre, Wednesday 27 August @ 6.30pm

All welcome. The format is watch the video, followed by a chance for a discussion, and a chat over a cuppa. This month will also be the debut of the GIANT tv screen kindly donated by Time Bank member Lynette & her husband!
